UNH Passport to Food Citizenship 2011Food Day is a new, national, annual celebration on October 24th created by the Center for Science in the Public Interest to increase awareness and action for a more sustainable food future. Communities across the nation will be hosting Food Day events and activities to support Food Day’s six commitments:

  1. 
Reduce diet-related disease by promoting safe, healthy foods
  2. Support sustainable farms & limit subsidies to big agribusiness
  3. 
Expand access to food and alleviate hunger
  4. 
Protect the environment & animals by reforming factory farms
  5. 
Promote health by curbing junk-food marketing to kids
  6. 
Support fair conditions for food and farm workers

UNH will be participating in Food Day with a month-long series of activities, culminating in a signature event on October 24th. A “passport” will be created for participants to have “stamped” at qualified events leading up to the Oct. 24th event will be launched in conjunction with UNH’s annual Local Harvest Feast on Sept. 21st. Participants will select events or activities to attend (listed below). Participants must gather 5 stamps in order to be entered into a raffle during the culminating event on Oct. 24th. Raffle prizes to include an iPad donated by UNH Dining, a year-long ZipCar membership donated by the Sustainability Academy, and more!

How does the passport work?

1. Obtain a passport at participating events, the Nutrition Program Office in Kendall 203, or the Sustainability Academy Office at Nesmith 107.  

2.  Present passport at qualified events to earn a sticker.

3.  Collect at least 5 stickers and enter your passport to win fabulous prizes like an iPad, cookbooks and a Zipcar membership. 

4.  Provide your contact information on the back of the passport and drop it off at any dining hall by October 25th for your chance to win prizes. Winners announced October 26th. 

 

Passport to Food Citizenship Events

Attend any 5 of the following events, have your passport stamped at the event, and submit your stamped passport at the culminating event on October 24th to be entered in a raffle!

  • Wednesday, September 21st: UNH’s annual Local Harvest Feast. The popular and award-winning event, which is open to the public, serves breakfast at Stillings Marketplace (7:15 – 10:30 a.m.), lunch at Elements at Philbrook Hall (11 a.m. – 4 p.m.), and dinner at Holloway Commons (4:30 – 9 p.m.), all on the UNH campus in Durham. The Local Harvest Feast is offered to all students on the UNH meal plan as well as to the general public (breakfast $8.95, lunch $12.95, dinner $16.95, plus tax). 
  • Tuesday, September 27th: Farm tours! Guided tours of UNH's own Woodman Farm at 11 a.m. or 2 p.m., and the UNH Organic Garden Club farm at 12:15 p.m. and 1:15 p.m.

  • Tuesday, October 4th: Film: "The Price of Sugar." 7:00 p.m., MUB Theater II. Presented by the UNH Peace and Justice League. Free and open to the public.
  • Thursday, October 6th: MOSAICO's Heritage Luncheon, Featuring locally-made, authentic Latin-American cuisine in celebration of the Hispanic diversity at UNH! 12:30-2pm. Strafford Room. Ticketed event (free), get your tickets at the MUB box office.
  • Friday, October 7th: Whole Earth Supper and Drum Supper. 6:00-8:00 p.m., Waysmeet Center. A meal of vegetarian and organic food  followed by a drum circle. All are welcome and plenty of drums and percussion instruments provided. Free and open to the public.
  • Tuesday, October 11th: Screening of "Queen of the Sun" by the Student Environmental Action Council (SEAC). 7:00 p.m., MUB Theater I. "Queen of The Sun" is an in-depth investigation to discover the causes and solutions an anthropogenic phenomenon causing honeybees to vanish from their hives and struggle to survive. Tickets are free of charge.
  • Friday, October 14th: Focus: Plant-based Proteins and Nutrition Savings Compared to Animal-based Protein. 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., Holloway Commons Dining Hall. Presented by Rochelle L'Italien, UNH Dining.
  • Friday, October 14th: Webcast on Farm Worker Justice, Webcast produced by “TED”. 3:30-6:30 p.m., Hamilton Smith 127. A 360-degree view of farmworkers today and throughout history; compare labor’s progress with other social justice movements; and end by discussing fair labor practices from a business standpoint. Hosted by Oxfam UNH. Free and open to the public.
  • Friday, October 14th: Community Dinner. 5:30 p.m., Waysmeet Center. An organic meal of food from the UNH Organic Garden, local farmers and producers made from scratch by the loving hands of many volunteers. A partnership of the UNH Organic Garden Club, the Waysmeet Center, The Cornucopia Food Pantry and SFAC. Free and open to the public.
  • Monday, October 17th: The Greenhorns film screening, 6:30 p.m., MUB Theater II. Hosted by Slow Food UNH, with special guests Mary and Aaron Brower from Brookford Farm in Rollinsford, NH. Free and open to the public.
  • Tuesday, October 18th: Fair Trade Chocolate. 7:00 p.m., Waysmeet Center. Come sample delicious fair trade chocolate, win chocolate prizes, view a screening of “The Dark Side of Chocolate” and learn more about how you can help change the exploitative practices of much of the Chocolate and Cocoa industry.  Co-Sponsored by the Waysmeet Center, the Waysmeet Student Association and the Committee on Rights and Justice 9CORAJ).   • Wednesday, October 19th: Waffle Taste Testing. 7:00 a.m.-10:30a.m., Holloway Commons Dining Hall. Come sample two variations of waffles and learn about different types of grains! Find out ways to incorporate a variety of whole grains into your diet while eating at the dining halls. Presented by the UNH Dietetic Interns.
  • Wednesday, October 19th: Conversation Cafe: Food Hardship in NH. 6:00-7:30 p.m., MUB 338-340. Join Professor Joanne Curran-Celentano for an engaging conversation about food insecurity in NH and the controversial role of public assistance and “food stamps”. Sponsored by the UNH Discovery Program. Free and open to the public.
  • Wednesday, October 19th: EcoGastronomy Food Day Film Showing. 5:00-7:00 p.m., Holloway Commons Hallway.  Students can watch clips from the PBS film Nourish while trying samples of a healthy homemade recipe using fresh locally grown ingredients. Nourish is a collection of short films that feature food advocates such as Michael Pollan, Jaime Oliver and Alice Waters, and explores the themes of edible education, farm to fork, and food and health. Free and open to the public.
  • Monday, October 24th: Breakfast at Stillings: Focus on whole grain and nutrient dense ways to eat breakfast with a focus on plant protein. Lunch at Holloway: Focus on a Mediterranean Wrap station for plant-based flavor and nutrition any day. Lunch at Philbrook: Focus on plant-based proteins and nutrition savings compared to animal-based protein. Presented by UNH Dietetic Interns with Rochelle L'Italien, UNH Dining.
  • Monday, October 24thThe Nutrition 401 class will open its discussion to other UNH members to hear about Academic and student activities that support making a food system difference via this UNH Food Day discussion. The class will be held in Demeritt Hall 112, and the public is invited to attend to learn about food related courses and programs at UNH. 
  • Monday, October 24th1st Annual NH Food Symposium! 6-8 p.m., MUB Strafford Room. A culminating event that captures student led, academic-based, and community-based initiatives. Participants will be able to hear about the variety of opportunities at UNH and meet with key stakeholders. Draft ideas for the where the Food Day 2011 to 2012 will take us will be explored. Come hear community, statewide stakeholders who are making significant contributions to this movement, ranging from farms and labor, cultural, nutritional and educational, food access and security, environmental and resources, political, economical, to celebratory and community. Representatives include, but are not limited to Slow Food, Student Nutrition Group, Organic Garden Club, Oxfam and Peace and Justice League, Seacoast Eat Local and the Heirloom Harvest Project, local farmers, and others!   • Friday, September 30th: Seacoast Permaculture: Sharing our Season's Highlights and Harvest. 6-8 p.m., Barrington, NH.
  • Saturday, October 1st: Apple Harvest Day. 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Downtown Dover, NH. Anyone looking for a slice of true Yankee life will find it at this food and craft fair, which draws more than 25,000 people to downtown Dover. There will be apples and candy apples and apple-pie contests, but also artists and hand-crafters, live entertainment, a “Green Marketplace,” a healthy living expo, a variety of activities for children and much more.   • Sunday, October 2nd: Great Bay Oyster Festival. 12-4 p.m., Seacoast Science Center, Odiorne State Park, Rye, NH. Admission fee $25 per person, includes 8 tickets for purchase of oysters & refreshments. Additional food & drink tickets are available at the event for $1 each. Children 12 years of age or under will be given free admission.
  • Sunday, October 2nd: Slow Food Seacoast Monthly Potluck. Bring a potluck dish that meets the 5$ Challenge (A Slow Food meal that costs 5 dollars per person) and your own plates & silverware. 5:30 p.m., Street Restaurant, Portsmouth, NH.

  • Friday, October 7th: Crop Mob at Tuttles/Sumama Farms in Dover, NH. Help the "crop mob" Sumama Farm (at Tuttle's Farm) in Dover. We will be harvesting sunflowers in order to make sunflower oil. Harvesting will start at 7am and will probably wrap up around 2 or 3 in the afternoon, but anyone is welcome to come and go as they please! NH Farm to School program in partnership with the Hillsborough County Conservation District will be having a Food Day event at the Great Brook School in Antrim, NH, with apple tasting in the cafeteria along with providing apple nutrition information and info on area farms.
