Wheels When You Want Them: Zipcar Comes to UNH |
||
Unzip the possibilities: this fall UNH became host to one of the largest Zipcar fleets north of Boston! “UNH is proud to welcome Zipcar. They're a perfect fit for our community,” says Stephen Pesci of UNH Campus Planning, which worked with University Transportation Services, the Office of Commuter Student Services, and the University Office of Sustainability to bring Zipcar to campus. “The goal is to reduce student, faculty and university car ownership and move towards higher utilized and more efficient and cost-effective car sharing. Zipcar is especially perfect for students. In addition, UNH has a suite of other services on campus like Wildcat transit, regional train and bus service, and GoLoco ridesharing, so there’s really no reason to deal with the hassle of having a car on campus.” The world’s largest self-service, on-demand car service, Zipcar is part of UNH’s commitment to climate protection and sustainability. |
According to Zipcar, each year its members drive 80% less (about 5,000 fewer miles), reducing congestion, greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption. Members also save an average $5,000 in car payments, gas, maintenance and insurance. Zipcar is easy: (1) become a member; (2) reserve a car online or on the phone, for a few hours or a day; (3) walk to the car and flash your Zipcar card to the windshield to unlock it; and (4) when you’re done, drive the car back to the same spot. All rates include insurance, maintenance, parking, and gas. Anyone at UNH aged 18+ can join. Members age 18-20 can use the Zipcars that live on campus, and members age 21+ also have access to thousands of Zipcars all around the world. UNH is starting with a fleet of Honda Insights and Civics - half of which are hybrids. |
Did You Know?There are three convenient “pods” on campus where you can pick up and drop off a Zipcar: one at the Lower Quad, one at Thompson Hall, and one at the Transit Center/Rail Station. |
|
UNH students, faculty, and staff can join Zipcar for only $35/year - and get $35 in free driving to use the first month! UNH departments can get accounts too - great for employee travel needs. Visit www.zipcar.com/unh to sign up. You can even buy gift memberships as holiday gifts. |

Why is reducing individual energy use on campus an important part of UNH's sustainability leadership? Being more efficient in our use of energy does not require limiting our activities or comfort, but can save a lot of money, reduce air pollution, and conserve natural resources for the future. What can faculty, staff and students do to reduce their energy use? Use energy at UNH with the same efficiency that you use it at home. Visit energy.unh.edu for information on how. What motivates you personally to be involved in sustainability? Scott Lindquist: Trying to get as much action as possible out of our energy dollars. Matt O’Keefe: By saving energy, you have the greatest influence that you control for reducing impacts to our environment. Jim Dombrosk: I've been working in the energy management field for 33 years. It's still fun and challenging with something new every day. Allan Trombley: The technology is constantly evolving; there is never a dull moment. Learn more at energy.unh.edu and unh.edu/etf. |
