Lou Simms - Profile in Sustainability

Why did you apply to intern at the Sustainability Institute?

I applied to intern at the Sustainability Institute because I wanted to learn more about how the Institute works and operates on a daily basis, and because I very much want sustainability to play a major role in my future career path.

Why is the sustainability data collection work you do important?

I help collect UNH sustainability data for the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS), the university's greenhouse gas emissions inventory and local food purchasing, the Princeton Review, and Sierra Club and more. The sustainability data collection work is essential to creating a more sustainable campus here at UNH. Knowledge is power, and we must understand as fully as possible the impact of our daily actions on the world around us if we want to cultivate a more sustainable campus. With the information collected by the Sustainability Institute, we also begin to see that in many cases the more sustainable practices are also the more financially sound practices as well.

What motivates you personally to be involved in sustainability?

I am motivated to work on sustainability because I share great love and appreciation for our natural environment and the great outdoors. I am dedicated to living my life in such a way that I leave this planet in a better condition than when I first arrived!
